Diet cured my acne

I suffered from acne from my middle teens right up until my late twenties. OK, the worst time was in my teens.

Nothing I used during all that time cured my acne, and I must have tried just about every over the counter treatment that was available. I even recall seeing my doctor about my acne when I was a teenager. I remember her saying that I would not have skin like a baby's bum (nappy rash?), but what she prescribed would clear up my spots. It didn't work either.

I discovered the "Hay Diet" as it was dubbed in the press. I studied the principles of food combining, as it is correctly called, and followed these dietary principles.

What was so remarkable about this diet?
The first thing to note is that I was not consciously controlling the number of calories that I consumed. I was eating foods that combined with each other. That was important, because it meant my body could digest my food more efficiently. That meant less waste and toxins in my body and less unused energy being stored as fat. That is why my weight went down until it reached equilibrium.

Secondly, my diet was naturally low in fat, even though some full fat foods such as butter were recommended in place of processed foods like margarine. In fact all highly processed foods were strictly forbidden. Nor was there many dairy products in the diet. There was plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, so it was high in dietary fibre and I also got all the vitamins and minerals my body needed.

Thirdly, I drank plenty of cold water each day as well as a glass of fresh fruit juice.

Out went refined carbohydrates including biscuits, cakes, chocolate, candy bars, colas and all breakfast cereals other than muesli. Sugar was replaced with honey. In came fresh food eaten in the correct combinations with meals based on proteins eaten on their own or with with neutral foods; starchy food (e.g. bananas, pears, bread, pasta etc.), again, eaten on their own or with neutral foods; or meals based on neutral foods.

I was surprised at the results
Within a week to ten days of starting to follow these dietary principles, I noticed three surprising things:
  1. My acne went away, and has not come back;
  2. I had more energy; and
  3. My weight started to go down, even though I was consuming as many calories as I did on my "regular" diet.

Where I had been going wrong
Up until then I had been treating the external symptoms of my acne. That is why it kept coming back. I thought acne could be cured by lotions and creams applied to my skin. That is what the pharmaceutical companies were saying, and I knew no different.

I did not know what was the root cause of my acne; that it is primarily caused by an excess of hormones that my body was trying to eliminate through my skin. I did not even know that my body naturally eliminates waste through the skin. Nor did I know that my acne was a condition that could respond very well to simple treatments such as having a healthy diet.

I stumbled upon what, for me, was the cure for my acne. I changing my diet.
